you will find some quotes and reviews about
Sue
and the Flaming Stars' new CD - 'Drivin' on the Highway of Love'
"...After
the release of her solodebut All I Can Do Is Dream You from 2002, the
new cd of Sue and her Flaming Stars is sparkling in stores right now.
With justice, I would say, because Sue Moreno seems to be the Great Unknown...
While her debut album is blessed with a great portion of bluesy and jazzy
tunes, on Drivin' on the Highway of Love Sue opens all doors wide to all
musicstyles popular in the 40s and 50s. Traditionally of course, but at
the same time rebellious and whipped up~ that's what Sue's music sounds
like. Her heroes Elvis, Hank Williams and Patsy Cline were like that and
didn't do it differently. In Moreno's hands everything changes into gold!..."
Ferenc Koolen, Music Magazine 'FRET', december 2004
"...Here
we have a very good singing girl from the Netherlands who also plays rhythm
guitar, she gives us a very pleasant and much variable mixture of rock
'n' roll and rockabilly with influenses from jazz, swing and latin rhythms
as well as hillbilly. The band consists of Dik Otten on both electric
and rhythm guitar, Willy Pieters on stringbass and Dennis Kneulman on
drums, dobro and guitar. There's also some guests which includes Hans
Van der Velde on lapsteel, John Permenter on fiddle and Hennie Korsten
on guitar.
Sue sings some of her songs in Spanish like "Besame Mucho" and
"Sway/Quien Sera" and it gives a very beatiful and relaxed feeling.
They have a very clear and airy sound and seems quite at home with different
styles. The musicians are very good and the record moves you, it's an
album wellworth picking up. They also have three original songs, among
them the titletrack..."

"...Sue
Dies
wird z.B. besonders beim Johnny Burnette Trio Cover Sweet Love On My Mind
deutlich.
I Don’t Care if the Sun Don’t Shine.

"...SUE
MORENO & THE FLAMING STARS - Drivin on the highway of love

"...Glamour
girl Sue Moreno's CD is hot! Her voice soft and sexy, the band as tight
as her skirts. Oh lala. Her smooth voice stays the focus point throughout
the 19 songs but the Flaming Stars can hold their own with the best of
them. Sue covers Rockabilly, Western Swing and Hillbilly Bop, Country
Ballads, 50s and 60s Elvis material and Latin flavored songs. Elvis' "I
Beg Of You" swings nicely, "Long Lonely Highway" with bluesy
guitar licks rocks Elvis' style and "Besame Mucho" (partly sung
in Spanish) opens with intense guitar licks and is as sexy as can be~
to quote Elvis author Ger Rijffs liner notes: "The ice cubes in my
drink are melting at the speed of light". I was trying to pick favorites
but that's almost impossible. The rockers "Two Long Years" and
their original "Oh Baby Baby" with a western swing flavor (fiddle
and all) are great but so are the many slower and mid-tempo numbers that
possess so much intensity like "Sway". Unless you're looking
for fast and furious Rockabilly only, give "Drivin' On The Highway
Of Love" a spin and you'll fall in love with Sue's silky voice and
a swinging band with a versatile repertoire and authentic 50s sound..."

"...E'
'My Heart' mambo style, richiami swing e jazz e qualche accenno blues
e country.
'I Beg of You' , 'Just Because', 'Long Lonely Highway' e 'I Don't Care
if the Sun Don't Shine' essattemente allo stesso modo come i pezzi originali
You're Mine'.

So what
do I know about temporary rock n roll / rockabilly bands? Very little
is the honest answer. The review section of this magazine is chuck full
of UK / Euro CDs each month but I seldom read them. As a first generation
rock n roller I have some difficulty in relating to homegrown bands, so
am I the right person to be reviewing this offering from a young lady
and three blokes from Holland, however attractive that lady may be (I
rather hoped this was a DVD!)? In the interest of editorial and Euro harmony,
I applied myself manfully to the task and I’m rather glad that I
did. Far from being the wham-bam neo-rockabilly thrash that I expected,
this turned out to be a highly professional product with excellent material
well-sung, well played and tastefully arranged.
Gene’s Johnny Burnette penned ‘My Heart’ is a fine example
of this. A good looking girl who likes Gene Vincent! Just my luck, thirty
years too late! To my surprise it was the Elvis songs I enjoyed the most.
I have had the King’s ‘I Beg of You’ etched on my heart
since 1958 but I was quite taken by Sue and the lads’ version, which
sounds like a different song while retaining the feel of the original.
‘Put the Blame on Me’ and ‘Long Lonely Highway’
work well too, ‘60s songs given the ‘50s treatment. ‘Just
Because’ is given a nice country feel by John Permenter’s
fiddle which crops up again on several numbers. From the title track,
‘Drivin’ on the Highway of Love’, to the closing ‘Lovesick
Blues’ I found this CD to be most agreeable and I was impressed
by Sue’s Spanish vocalising on ‘Besame Mucho’. As a
pal of mine once said about ‘Race with the Devil’: “I
didn’t understand the words, but I liked it!” With hand on
heart I could say that Sue Moreno has the greatest female singing voice
I’ve heard, I was impressed by her work on this CD. This was all
new ground to me but I wouldn’t think that young shavers who dig
the current scene could do much better than this. Maybe I should get out
more...

19 songs?
Good lord! It's almost sad that folks from as far away as you can do good
ol' rockin' American music better than a lot of the bands we have here.
You sure you're not from Texas? I featured the new CD on the program last
week. (...) Congrats on another great disk, you know I'll play the daylights
out of it.

Is it
possible to stay objective when Sue asks me to write a review on her last
cd? Yes, cause I don’t have to fool around with the truth: the cd
sounds just great.
Sue obviously waited a while before recording a cd with her band (although
her solo-cd came out recently). Her accompanying band has grown in the
way they play and sound, and Sue knows how to give every note her special
treatment. The repertoire is definitely different from her solo cd, even
though there are some links like the sultry Besame Mucho, or Sway/Quien
Sera, that is to actually to be found on that album. Those songs provide
a nice variation to the westernswing and rockabilly songs that all have
a countrytwang. Sue and her band are charmed by original country sounds
anyway, as you can hear on her own three compositions; the definite version
of Drivin’ on the Highway of Love (that sounds just a little better
than on our own Bop!-cd), Say You’re Mine (that makes all country-ingredients
to a great musical piece) and Oh Baby Baby (which is played nice and fast
and accompanied by great fiddle- playing). But really rocking is what
Sue and the Flaming Stars do as well. Sweet Love on my Mind is not just
another version and moreover, this version sounds sexy, which is not really
the case on the other versions! Guess why... Besides that, it is nice
to hear a female version of the (naturally present) Elvis-songs or some
songs inspired by Elvis, like Just Because. And now we’re not even
talking about the jazzy and bluesy songs that can be found on the album
as well... Lots of variation, and the band shows to be able to play all
kinds of varieties as well, thanks to Dik (guitars), Willy (stand up bass),
Dennis (drums) and the additional musicians Hans vander Velde (lapsteel)
and John Permenter (fiddle).
On this album we can hear 19 Sue & the Flaming Stars songs, so that
fact, added up to the already mentioned feats of arms we can say that
this album is without any doubt a very successful debut album.

This
is the second full lenght feature from Sue Moreno on Rarity Records. With
3 new self-penned tracks and a wide variety of 40's and 50's covers, some
of 'em never heard done before by a female artist. But I for one would
buy this CD just for it's front cover. Yes, of course because of that
great car. Oh, you hadn't seen that car yet? I wonder what you were looking
at then!
Sue's voice is the sweetest, and on her first album, she sang all of the
sweetest songs. Her live show is quite a bit wilder, and a lot more rockabilly
too. So Sue and her Flaming Stars decided on more rockabilly on this release.
A great choice to my humble opinion. Of course Sue still sings the songs
the only way she can: sweet and rockin'. The 3 new originals are the title
track "Drivin' On The Highway Of Love", the bluesy and somewhat
experimental "Say You're Mine" and the fast paced "Oh Baby
Baby", with great fiddling by guest musician John Permenter.
Among the selection of covers, that all got the Sue Moreno treatment,
are
great bopping versions of Elvis Presley's "I Beg Of You", "Just
Because" and
"I Don't Care If The Sun Don't Shine", Gene Vincent's ever beautiful
"My
Heart" (written by Johnny Burnette), Bobby Helms' classic "Tennessee
Rock
'n' Roll", a superb slapping rockabilly rendition of "Sweet
Love On My Mind"
(wow!), and a warm blooded "Many Tears Ago" (Connie Francis)
with great
guitar picking. Sue's version of "Sway" is a bit too slow for
me, but that's
probably because I'm used to the fabulous version of the song by The
Ballroomers.
For sure this platter holds something for everyone, and for every mood.
Some
real cool boppers, hot rockabilly, great guitar licks combined with bone
chilling fiddle squeaks and great slapping. This gal sure can sing, and
she's got one heck of band too. Enjoy!

"...It
doesn't have to be a Long Lonely Highway Drivin' on the Highway of Love
when you're in the company of sweet Sue Moreno and the Flaming Stars.
The band playin' is a cool combination of the original Blue Moon Boys
(Scotty, Bill and D.J.) meeting the Stray Cats, mixed with genuine Flaming
Stars fuel. Shaken not stirred!
Sue's singing and the Stars blistering backing come together as Sue's
skirts. Va-va-voom! At a highly paced tempo no less than nineteen songs
are performed on this
new baby.
Three of them self-penned by Miss Moreno with a little help from a friend.
And even though these might not yet rank shoulder to shoulder with the
likes of Leiber and Stoller, they are a brave start and deserve our applause.
They mix in nicely with timeless classics such as "My Heart"
(with a great Buddy Holly touch), "Sweet Love on my Mind", "Blues
Stay Away" and "Many Tears Ago", one I remember having
on a 45rpm by Connie Francis when I was a kid, back in the dark ages.
No less than
five songs come from the Elvis Songbook. And why not? The guy was the
best! Instead of the pom-pom-pom intro vocals on the "I Beg of You"
original we are here treated to a Western swing beat that really works
well. Refreshing!
More country
sounds with great fiddle playing by John Permenter who also shares vocals
with Sue on "Just Because". More Sun related Elvis is offered
with "I Don't Care if the Sun Don't Shine".
Both "Put the Blame on Me" and "Long Lonely Highway"
originated in the early sixties and get a rockin' treatment that hits
you like a ton of bricks.
But Sue and the boys have much more to offer besides ballsy rock and country
like sounds. Try to picture a somewhat sleazy strip joint back in the
1950s....
On stage a dark-haired beauty oozing sensuality into the mike while performing
"Besame Mucho" and "Sway". Partly sung in English
and Spanish. Gawd, the ice cubes in my drink are melting at the speed
of light! This, to me, is Miss Moreno at her hottest.
But you of course can pick your own favorites.
If it's rockabilly, western swing, countrylike ballads or the Latin flavored
songs. It's all here on this one CD.
Whatever your taste, listening to "Drivin' on the Highway of Love"
leaves you with a mighty good feeling. And isn't that what good fun music
is all about?
I rest my case.
Have a nice day..."
